Charles Sillem Lidderdale (1831-1895) was a London based genre painter. He exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists, the British Institute and the Royal Academy amongst others. His work is often small scale and the subject frequently pretty farm girls.
His work is illustrated in The Dictionary of Victorian Painters (p.298), and in Popular 19th Century Painting – A Dictionary of European Genre Painting (p. 82)
His work is represented in the collection of the City of London Art Gallery.

“Tobias & the Angel” Mongram Mattia Preti c1700

“Tobias & the Angel”
Oil on canvas c1700, in the manner of Mattia Preti & signed ‘M.P.’ in monogram.

Mattia Preti was born in 1613 in Taverna (Calabria), dying in 1699 in Valetta (Malta). He was a painter of historical and religious subjects, and church painting, working in many cities in Italy and for the last 40 years of his life, on Malta, where he was made a Knight of the Order of Malta, and was known as the ‘Knight of Calabria’
Tobias was sent by his father Tobit (in the ‘Book of Tobit’) to collect a sum of money: on the way, washing his feet in the river Tigris, he was attacked by a fish, which tried to swallow his foot; by order of the angel, he caught it.

Harold Dearden was a painter in oil and watercolour; he was born in 1888, studying at the Rochdale School of Art under H.B. Carpenter between 1905 and 1910, and at the Royal Cambrian Academy under Moira between 1910 and 1915. He exhibited at the principal London galleries and was head of the Swindon Art School between 1920 and 1950. He was elected Associate of the Royal College of Art.

Gillows Mahogany and inlaid clothes press c1790

A George III mahogany and inlaid clothes press c1790, signed ‘Gillows Lancaster’. This wardrobe has the unusual feature of detachable ‘loose French feet’ as described in the Estimate Sketch Books above (they are removed by unscrewing). Please note the very subtle, bookmatched veneers to the drawer fronts, centred around the brass thread escutcheons (key holes) of the two bottom drawers. Such refined details are the hallmark of Gillows cabinet making. It is comparable to James Maxwell’s secretaire press, 1792, stamped ‘Gillows Lancaster’ illustrated by Susan Stuart pp.65 Vol II, ‘Gillows of Lancaster & London 1730-1840’
