“Gay Nineties” Charcoal & pastel by Paul L Clemens c1940
Paul Lewis Clemens was born in Wisconsin 1911 and died in Los Angeles in 1992. He spent most of his lengthy career in the Los Angeles area after moving from the Midwest, where he attended the Chicago Art Institute. He began painting for the Depression-era Works Progress Administration and won several awards for figure painting, which he taught at L.A.’s Otis Art Institute in the early 1940s. His work was exhibited at the Carnegie International in Pittsburgh, Pennsylania, the National Academy of Design and the Metropolitan Museum, both in New York City. His portrait subjects include Katharine Hepburn, Spencer Tracy, Audrey Hepburn, William Holden, Frank Sinatra, Henry Fonda, Eleanor Parker (former wife), Ronald Colman, Angela Lansbury and many more.
His work is represented in the collection of the Smithsonian Museum of American Art.

“Girl in Brown” Oil on canvas c1915 by Derwent Lees.
Exhibited: City of Bradford Art Gallery Jubilee Exhibition 1954
Derwent Lees was born in Melbourne in 1885, dying in London in 1931. He trained at the Slade School of Fine Art, London and taught at the school from 1908. He was active in Paris, and later, in Russia, Germany, Belgium and Italy. Lee’s painting ‘Pear Tree in Blossom’ featured in the exhibition ‘Tableaux Britanniques modern de la Tate Gallery’ (Modern British paintings from the Tate Gallery) at the Musée du Jeu de Paume in Paris in 1946. His paintings show the influence of Innes and Augustus John, with whom he was closely associated at the beginning of his career and whose model Euphemia Lamb, he married. He exhibited with the New English Art Club and held his first exhibition at the Chenil Galleries in 1913. Painted in the spirit of the N.E.A.C., his figure paintings, portraits and drawings became well known in London.
His work is represented in the collections of the Tate Gallery London, the Manchester City Art Gallery, as well as many other provincial British galleries, the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the Art Gallery of South Australia.

“Judith and Holfernes” Oil on panel c by Johannes Hendricus Jurres c1920.
Johannes Hendricus Jurres was born in Leeuwarden in 1875, dying in 1946. He was a painter, draughtsman and illustrator, depicting religious subjects, figure compositions and genre scenes. He studied at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, where he became a Professor in 1921. He was awarded a Silver Medal at the Paris Salon of the Societé des Artistes Français in 1913. He also took part in exhibitions in St Louis, USA and the Panama-Pacific exhibitions held in San Francisco in 1915 and Venice in 1920. His work was influenced by Decamps, Diaz and Delacroix.
His work is represented in the St Louis Museum.

“Fresh Greens” Oil on canvas dated 1910 by R Russell McNee G.I.
Robert Russell McNee was a landscape and figure painter, born in Milngavie in Scotland in 1880, dying in 1950. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art and exhibited at the Glasgow Institute for the Fine Art, the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Hibernian Academy and the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolours amongst others. He enjoyed particularly the rural farm scenes of Perthshire and the east coast. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour, the Glasgow Institute for the Fine Arts and the Paris Salon des Artistes Français.
His work is represented in the collection of the Kirkaldy Art Gallery and Culzean Castle (National Trust for Scotland).

The Donkey Cart” Oil on board c1870 by John Absolon
John Absolon was born in 1815, dying in 1895. He was a painter of landscape, seascape and genre in both oil and watercolour. He first exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists in 1832, at the age of 17. After visiting Paris, he became a member of the New Watercolour Society in 1838. He exhibited mainly at the New Watercolour Society, but also at the Royal Academy, the British Institution and the Royal Society of British Artists.
His work is illustrated in the Dictionary of Victorian Artists and the Dictionary of British Watercolour Artists.

“The Fairy Wedding” Oil on canvas c1860 by Edward H Corbold R.I.
Edward Henry Corbold was born in 1815, dying in 1905. He was a pupil of Henry Sass and studied at Royal Academy Schools. His main work was in watercolour, producing scenes from literature, the bible, and daily life. A small proportion of his pictures are in oil: “The Canterbury Pilgrims” exhibited at the Royal Academy Show of 1874, for example. In 1842, his watercolour ’The Woman Taken in Adultery’ was bought by Prince Albert and nine years later, he was appointed “instructor of historical painting” to the Royal Family, for whom he worked for 21 years; many of his best works were acquired by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert for his royal pupils. He was the official artist at the ‘Eglinton Tournament’ of 1839. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, the British Institute, the Royal Society of British Artists and the New Watercolour Society between 1835 and 1871.
His work is illustrated in the Dictionary of Victorian Painters and the Dictionary of British Watercolour Artists to 1920.

William A Breakspeare was a London genre painter born in 1855, dying in 1914. He studied in Paris and was a foundation member of the Birmingham Art Circle. He was a member of the Newlyn School in Cornwall. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1891 and 1903 and at the Royal Society of British Artists and the Grosvenor Gallery. His subjects were mainly genre or 18th Century scenes

Charles Sillem Lidderdale (1831-1895) was a London based genre painter. He exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists, the British Institute and the Royal Academy amongst others. His work is often small scale and the subject frequently pretty farm girls.
His work is illustrated in The Dictionary of Victorian Painters (p.298), and in Popular 19th Century Painting – A Dictionary of European Genre Painting (p. 82)
