A George III mahogany and inlaid clothes press c1790, signed ‘Gillows Lancaster’. This wardrobe has the unusual feature of detachable ‘loose French feet’ as described in the Estimate Sketch Books above (they are removed by unscrewing). Please note the very subtle, bookmatched veneers to the drawer fronts, centred around the brass thread escutcheons (key holes) of the two bottom drawers. Such refined details are the hallmark of Gillows cabinet making. It is comparable to James Maxwell’s secretaire press, 1792, stamped ‘Gillows Lancaster’ illustrated by Susan Stuart pp.65 Vol II, ‘Gillows of Lancaster & London 1730-1840’
